About the Samoan language

Samoan, or gagana Sāmoa, is a Polynesian language. Samoa made it the country’s official language by law in 2014 (Islands Business), and American Samoa recognizes it as an official language of equal importance with English (Samoa Observer).

How is Samoan written?

Samoan uses a 17-letter alphabet, with the glottal stop written as an inverted comma and the macron marking long vowels. Both change meaning: toto means blood and totō means to plant, and tala means story and talā means dollar. Macron use is still debated, so tell Tomedes which convention your readers expect (NZ Ministry for Pacific Peoples).

What is formal Samoan?

Samoan has a formal style used in writing, church and speeches, and an everyday style that is not written. It also has a respect vocabulary, gagana faʻaaloalo, used with chiefs, officials and clergy, in which the word for house changes depending on who is addressed (Ministry for Pacific Peoples, above). The audience decides the register.

Commonly translated Samoan words and phrases

Samoan can be written with or without the macron and the glottal stop mark, and sources differ, so the forms below should be checked with a native speaker before print use. Here are the most commonly translated Samoan words and phrases (see the New Zealand Ministry for Pacific Peoples language card).

  • Hello (formal): Tālofa lava
  • Hi (informal): Mālō
  • Goodbye: Tōfā
  • Thank you: Faʻafetai (very much: Faʻafetai tele lava)
  • Please: Faʻamolemole
  • Yes: ʻIoe
  • No: Leai
  • Excuse me: Tulou
  • How are you? ʻO ā mai oe?
