About Paradigm Math

An equity-driven TK–8 math curriculum built for California

Paradigm Math is an equity-driven TK–8 mathematics curriculum developed specifically for California schools. Aligned to the California Math Framework and the California Common Core State Standards, Paradigm's program is built around the belief that every student deserves a math education that honors their potential and lived experience, regardless of background, income, or academic history.

The curriculum spans Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 8 and embeds the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) throughout every unit, encouraging students to reason abstractly, persevere through challenges, and build mathematical confidence through structured, student-centered instruction. Paradigm's program includes student books, teacher books, and a full suite of instructional resources, designed with real teachers and diverse learners in mind, and supported by professional learning and coaching for schools and districts.

The Challenge

Three challenges in translating a full TK–8 math textbook series

Translating a math textbook series is a different category of project from translating a document or a general curriculum guide. A math textbook is a precisely engineered instructional object. Every number, symbol, equation, diagram label, and word problem is placed deliberately, and the relationship between the visual layout and the mathematical content is part of how students learn. Paradigm Math's request presented three challenges that required a highly structured, specialist workflow.

Mathematical content needing both linguistic accuracy and instructional integrity

Mathematical Spanish is not simply translated English. SMP terminology, grade-level vocabulary, word problem structures, and the language used to describe operations and reasoning all have established Spanish equivalents that California educators and students expect. Paradigm had already developed grade-level Spanish glossaries and SMP equivalents, and every translator had to apply them consistently across all grades and book types.

MS Publisher files requiring a specialist DTP workflow

Paradigm's textbooks are produced in Microsoft Publisher, not InDesign. Publisher files cannot simply be exported, translated in a memory tool, and reimported. The workflow required extracting content into bilingual tables, translating with glossary reference applied, then reimplementing the translated text directly in Publisher while preserving the original format, layout, colors, fonts, and mathematical symbols exactly as they appeared in the English source.

A grade-by-grade delivery schedule across the full series

This was not a single delivery. The engagement ran across multiple grade-level batches, TK Books, Grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8, plus additional files and missing file supplements, each with its own deadline tied to Paradigm's publishing and adoption schedule. Managing it required an account structure that could handle ongoing orders, mid-project supplementary files, and one consistent quality standard across every batch.

Glossary-anchored translation using Paradigm's Spanish reference materials

Before translation began on each batch, translators were provided with Paradigm's grade-specific Spanish glossaries and SMP equivalents, the reference materials Paradigm had developed over years of work with California's Spanish-speaking student population. These were applied as mandatory reference, so every mathematical term, SMP reference, and grade-level vocabulary item appeared in the form Paradigm's educators and students expected. Translators did not make independent decisions on established terminology.

A Publisher-native DTP workflow preserving layout, format, and math symbols

Each batch followed a structured three-stage workflow: content extraction from Publisher into bilingual tables, translation and review with glossary reference applied, and direct reimplementation of translated text into the original Publisher files. Mathematical symbols (sum, division, multiplication, and all others) were preserved exactly as in the English source. Fonts, colors, layout structure, and the spatial relationships between text and math content were maintained, so Paradigm received Publisher-ready files, not generic translations needing reformatting.

Grade-by-grade batch delivery with consistent quality throughout

Each grade-level batch was tracked and delivered independently against Paradigm's publishing deadlines, with the same glossary reference, workflow, and quality standard applied from the first batch to the last. When supplementary files and missing file additions emerged mid-engagement, they were folded into the existing workflow without disrupting the production schedule for grade levels already in progress.

Terminology consistency management across a multi-grade engagement

With content spanning multiple grade levels and book types, consistent terminology across the full engagement was a structural challenge in itself. Math terms appearing across student books, teacher books, and assessment materials had to be rendered the same way throughout, regardless of which batch was in production or which translator handled each grade. Tomedes used the Key Terms Glossary tool to build and enforce a unified terminology reference across all grades, preventing the drift common in long-running, multi-batch engagements.

SMP framework language carrying pedagogical register, not just accuracy

The Standards for Mathematical Practice are embedded in lesson openings, model sections, guided instruction, collaborative practice, and lesson closings throughout every grade. The Spanish rendering of SMP language had to function as the working instructional language teachers use and students hear repeatedly. This required translators familiar with California's math education environment, not just general educational translation experience, so the SMP language in Spanish carried the same pedagogical weight and classroom usability as the original.
