Say good-bye to the days of not understanding what your Irish relatives just said to you in that e-mail. A new English Irish dictionary is now available online, although the content won’t be complete until the end of the year 2014. The dictionary was launched on January 24 by President Michael D Higgins and is available on http://www.focloir.ie. After the online edition is fully published, a printed version will be released.

The dictionary is illustrated with examples that show Irish context and also displays grammatical information and audio clips.  The dictionary is free of charge for users and is available on both mobile devices and computers.

The online version of the dictionary offers a search feature for easy access to the word you’re looking for. It also includes variations of the word to make it easy to find what you’re looking for and see what other pronunciations might be.

While most of us can already decipher the difference between “mom” and “mum”, this dictionary can certainly be beneficial for some of the other slang words that get lost in translation between the different countries.
