TRANSLATION AND POWER

Call for papers

Among the many possible perspectives from which translation can be approached there is one that perceives it as an activity taking place not on a neutral plane, but rather in real social, political and cultural situations. Since all the parties involved in the process have vested interests in the production and reception of texts across linguistic and cultural boundaries, translation is no longer viewed as a process of faithful reproduction of the original, but rather as an activity that involves deliberate acts of selection, construction, and omission of information. It is invariably and inextricably linked to cultural dominance, assertion, and resistance – in short, to power.

With our theme of Translation and Power we wish to draw attention to the influence exerted by authorities and powerful institutions on the translation process, as well as the ways in which translators managed to resist that influence and use translation to introduce new ideas and modes of expression across languages and societies.

The main aim of the conference is to provide a platform for discussion on the broad spectrum of issues pertaining to the concept of translation and power. We invite specialists in the areas of literature, linguistics, translation studies, as well as cultural studies to participate in the event. We are open to a wide range of approaches and would welcome researchers specializing in various types of discourse – from literary, historical, social and political discourse, to specialist, professional, audiovisual and other.

The conference is going to address a number of issues, including, but not limited to the following:

translation of political discourse

translation of global news

translation and globalization

translation of minority languages

translation and democracy

translation vs censorship and manipulation

translation as a catalyst for social change

translation and ideological negotiations

translation and cultural struggles

translation and interpreting in conflict situations

translation as a conflict-generating factor in political narratives

translation in communications of ad hoc organisations in social media

nationalism in translation
