Nepali is a language spoken by more than 17 million people who principally live in Nepal and some parts of India. There are also pockets of Nepali-speaking communities around the countries of Bhutan, Brunei, and Myanmar. This language is also known to its speakers as Gurkha, Gorkhali, Gurkhali, and Khaskura and originated from a language spoken by the ancient Kashra people.
Nepali is the official language of Nepal, although only 45% of the population speak it as their mother tongue. There are actually about 123 local languages spoken all around Nepal, with Maithili Bhojpuri, Tamang, and Tharu being the most common. The government of Nepal uses Nepali for all official purposes, so it is employed within the legal and educational system. Nepali also must be studied in schools until the 10th grade.
Nepali uses the Devanagari script, which was developed in India between the 1st to the 4th century CE. Devanagari is a compound word (deva + nigari) in which the literal translation for “deva” is “divine” or “heavenly.” It is also a term for deity in Hinduism. The script is therefore very sacred and has been used for many religious and philosophical texts over the centuries. Devanagari is written from left to right, and from top to bottom. It shares many similarities with the Nandinagari script, which was found in countless ancient manuscripts of South India.
The Nepali language is divided into three major dialect groups of western, central and eastern. These dialect groups are divided according to their geographical location. Within these three different dialect groups, there are a variety of dialects. Just some of these dialects are Achhami, Baitadeli, Bajhangi, Bajurali, Bheri, Dadeldhuri, Dailekhi, Darchulali, Darchuli, Doteli, Gandakeli, Humli, Purbeli, and Soradi. There is also a different variant of Nepali used by the royal family and most of the upper-class population. This is distinct because it has a specific vocabulary and four ways to address someone according to their social status. Today, this variant is increasingly adopted by the educated middle class and wealthy population.
