English to Czech translation

English to Czech is the direction Tomedes handles most, with about 97% of Czech assignments since January 2024. Czech is among the 15 most used content languages on the web (W3Techs), and it is one of the EU’s 24 official languages, official since 2004 (European Union).

Czech to English translation

Czech to English translation is most often needed for civil records, immigration papers and business correspondence. Any foreign-language document filed with USCIS needs a full English translation with the translator’s certification of completeness and accuracy (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)).

Which Czech translation services does Tomedes provide?

Czech projects are matched to a linguist who knows the subject, across the services below.

Software, app and game localization

Software and app text is the most common subject of Czech work at Tomedes, with more than 1 in 3 Czech assignments since January 2024. Interface strings, help files and game text are translated with the length limits and placeholders of the source file kept intact.

Certified Czech translation

Tomedes provides a signed certificate of accuracy for Czech translations of birth certificates, diplomas, transcripts and immigration documents. For documents going to Czech authorities, check whether the receiving office needs a translator from the Czech Ministry of Justice register, which the Czech Consulate General in Chicago explains.

Business and technical documents

Reports, contracts, manuals and product documentation translated into and from Czech. A security company asked for a Czech translation of its quarterly report, and the confidentiality of the file mattered as much as the language.

About the Czech language

Czech is a West Slavic language and the official language of the Czech Republic, spoken by about 12 million people (UCLA Department of Slavic Languages). It is written in the Latin alphabet with háčeks and čárkas, which files and fonts must keep.

What makes Czech hard to translate?

Czech has seven grammatical cases, three genders, free word order and no articles, so a sentence cannot be translated word for word. It also has two registers, Standard Czech for writing and Common Czech for everyday speech (Masaryk University Language Centre), and informal and formal forms of address, so the audience decides the tone.

Is Czech the same as Slovak?

No. Czech and Slovak are very similar and mutually intelligible, but they are distinct languages with their own standards. A Czech translation is not a Slovak translation, and Tomedes assigns each to a native speaker of the target language.

Did the Czech language almost disappear?

A popular story says puppet theater saved Czech from extinction. The record is more careful: after 1620, German replaced Czech in official and literary use, but Czech stayed the spoken language of most people and was revived in the 19th century (Masaryk University Language Centre, above).

How hard is Czech to learn?

The Foreign Service Institute places Czech in Category III, about 44 weeks or 1,012 class hours for an English speaker (Department of State). That effort is why professional documents need a native linguist.

Commonly translated Czech words and phrases

Czech has informal and formal forms, so the right phrase depends on who is being addressed (see the Charles University phrase list). Here are some of the most commonly translated Czech words and phrases.

  • Hello (informal), also goodbye: Ahoj
  • Good day (formal): Dobrý den
  • Good morning: Dobré ráno
  • Good evening: Dobrý večer
  • Good night: Dobrou noc
  • Goodbye (formal): Na shledanou
  • Thank you: Děkuji
  • Please, you are welcome: Prosím
  • Yes, no: Ano, ne
  • How are you? Jak se máš? (informal), Jak se máte? (formal)
  • I am well: Mám se dobře
  • Excuse me: Promiňte
  • Do you speak English? Mluvíte anglicky?
  • I do not understand: Nerozumím
  • How much is it? Kolik to stojí?
