- Modern Uzbek dialects have been considerably influenced by a few diverse dialect groups like Karluk, Kipchak and Oguz. The various dialects of Uzbek have been traditionally divided into two groups based on their phonetic features. The "O" group includes dialects spoken in areas like Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent and surrounding areas. The "A" group is further divided into two subgroups based on the use of initial consonants.
- Among the most popular dialects of Uzbek are Ferghana dialect, Afghan dialect, Chimkent-Turkestan dialect, Surkhandarya dialect and Khorezm dialect.
- Due to Islamic influence, Uzbek vocabulary has a substantial presence of Arabic words which have entered its vocabulary through Persian. It has also been heavily influenced by Persian languages spoken in the neighboring regions and dialects like Farsi, Dari and Tajik.
- Until 1927 Uzbek was written using the Arabic alphabet and from 1927 to 1940, with the Latin alphabet followed by Cyrillic. From the mid-90's onwards Latin has readopted as the official alphabet.
