Faroese is a West Scandinavian, or West Nordic language which is a part of the North Germanic group of languages. It has somewhere around 47,000 speakers primarily based in the Faroe Islands. Faroese has close relation with the Icelandic language and dialects used in western Norway. However due to geographical isolation, Faroese language has developed a unique identity of its own.
At Tomedes we have worked on many Faroese document translation projects and have gathered considerable experience on the way. We now offer Faroese translation to and from many languages including Faroese to English and English to Faroese translation.
- Faroese is supposed to have descended from the Old Norse language that was spoken in Scandinavia during the Viking Age.
- Written Faroese appeared for the first time during the 14th century. Initially most of the Faroese writing consisted of fables and sagas. The first standard Faroese script was developed by Venceslaus Ulricus Hammershaimb in 1846. This led to the appearance of modern Faroese literature towards the end of the 19th Century with the first newspaper in the Faroese language appearing in 1890.
- The modern development of Faroese language kick-started in 1937, when it replaced Danish as the official school language. In 1938, it was adopted as the language of the church, and in 1948 it became the national language. The language was in common use by the 1980s.
- At present, Faroese is written using an alphabet that has been derived from Latin. It contains 29 letters.
- Faroese grammar is quite similar to Old Norse and modern Icelandic. It is an inflected language which contains four cases (accusative, dative genitive, and nominative) and three grammatical genders.
