Faroese is a West Scandinavian, or West Nordic language which is a part of the North Germanic group of languages. It has somewhere around 47,000 speakers primarily based in the Faroe Islands. • The modern development of Faroese language kick-started in 1937, when it replaced Danish as the official school language. In 1938, it was adopted as the language of the church, and in 1948 it became the national language. The language was in common use by the 1980s.  
  

• At present, Faroese is written using an alphabet that has been derived from Latin. It contains 29 letters.
  

• Faroese grammar is quite similar to Old Norse and modern Icelandic. It is an inflected language which contains four cases (accusative, dative genitive, and nominative) and three grammatical genders.
