- Many linguists share the opinion that Divehi is a descendent of Old Sinhala or Elu. Through its history Divehi has been influenced by many languages including Arabic, English, French, Hindi, Malayalam, Persian, Portuguese, Sinhala and Tamil. Of all these language Arabic has played the most influential role.
- Divehi and Sinhala combined together make for Insular Indo-Aryan - a special subgroup of languages within the Modern Indo-Aryan languages.
- Since Divehi is spoken across many islands which are widely distributed, it is marked by differences in pronunciation and vocabulary across the various islands.
- The mainstream or standard form of Divehi is called Malé Bas. It has been based on a variation of the language as spoken in the capital of Maldives.
- The Divehi language uses an elaborate system of class distinction which is expressed across three levels, first level - enme maaiy goiy or reethi baas, second level - maaiy goiy, and third level - aadhaige goiy. These levels represent the degree of formality used in the language.
- The first level is the most formal and was originally used to address members of upper class or royalty. Now it’s used to respectfully address elders. The second level is used for addressing strangers and officials, and the third level is used in everyday informal conversations.
- Divehi has had its own script for over two thousand years right from the time Buddhist monks in Maldives copied and translated various Buddhist scriptures.
- Divehi was written earlier using the Divehi Akuru or Dhivehi letters. It was written from left to right. However Divehi Akuru was replaced by the Arabic script and in the recent past it has started being written using the Tāna script which is written in the right to left direction.
