- Welsh originated as an independent language sometime during the 6th century from Brythonic which was a common ancestor to Welsh, Breton, Cornish, and Cumbric (now extinct).
- Welsh speakers can be found in many parts of the world, but they are concentrated in large numbers in Great Britain, US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It is used as a first language mostly in the less urban areas that lie towards west and north of Wales. These areas are Anglesey, Carmarthenshire, Conwy, Ceredigion, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, north Pembrokeshire, extreme south-west and north-west Powys, and some parts of west Glamorgan. However one can find fluent speakers of the language anywhere in Wales.
