Tsonga language, also known as Xitsonga is the native language of the Tsonga people of southern Africa. The language is a part of the Bantu branch within the Niger-Congo languages group. Outsiders also refer to the Tsonga language as Xichangana or "Shangaan" but that's an erroneous term. Tsonga is recognized as an official language of South Africa.

Tomedes works with professional Tsonga translation providers offering document translation services for a wide range of language pairs including Tsonga to English and English to Tsonga translation. Our translators have produced many high quality Tsonga translations to the great satisfaction of our customers.

  • There are over 1.5 million Tsonga speakers in Limpopo province of South Africa along with the Gauteng and Mpumalanga Province. Another 1.5 million speakers live in Mozambique, while Zimbabwe has 100,000 and Swaziland 19,000 speakers.
  • There are many dialects of Tsonga language spoken over an area extending from the far north (Save River in Zimbabwe) to the south (KwaZulu/Natal).
  • Most of these dialects are mutually intelligible but at the same time they carry distinct differences based on geographical, as well as colonial influences.
  • Xironga and Chihlengwe dialects are closely related to Tsonga.
  • The dialects of Tsonga have been influenced in varying degrees by Zulu. Tsonga as spoken in Zimbabwe has been influenced by the Ndebele language.
  • The grammar of Tsonga language is typical of Bantu languages, with sentences following a subject-verb-object order.
  • The language has been influenced by European languages as a result of its colonial past, consequently its vocabulary contains words from Afrikaans, Portuguese and English. Dominant neighboring languages like isiZulu have also contributed words to Tsonga.
  • The Tsonga script is based on the Latin alphabet. But it contains some sounds which do not exist in European Colonial Language and maybe spelled with a combination of letters. Written Tsonga has been standardized, but since the standardization has been fairly recent there are several Tsonga dialects which pronounce certain words differently than the way they are written.
