Tatar is a Turkic language with approximately 7 million speakers. Native Tatar speakers are known as Tatars and are primarily found in Russian Republic of Tatarstan. - In 1917, Russia declared the Tatar language as a de facto official language in the Tatar–Bashkir Soviet Socialist Republic. Tatar also serves as the official language in Idel-Ural State.
- Through its history Tatar has been written with several different alphabets. These include the Orkhon alphabet which was used before 9th century AD, followed by an adapted Arabic script which was used till 1920. Between 1920-27 another modified version of the Arabic script called Yaña imlâ was used. After that Tatar has been more commonly written using the Cyrillic alphabet and different versions of Latin alphabet.
- The official script used for writing Tatar is based upon Cyrillic alphabet. It features a few additional letters that are not used in Slavic languages. Other scripts, mostly Latin and Arabic, are also used sometimes.
- The use of Tatar language began to decline from the 1930s and by the 1980s it was not even studied in city schools by Tatar students. Although the language was used in rural schools, Tatar-speaking students did not have much chances of studying in a university as higher education was in Russian. Even in Tatarstan higher education in the language was limited to humanities.
- Tatar is not an endangered language as it is the main language used in the rural areas of Tatarstan, however it continues to be a low prestige language.
- Tatar is spoken in three main dialects which are further divided into sub-dialects, the main dialects are
- Western (Mishar or Mişär)
- Middle (Qazan) and
- Eastern (Siberian)

- The literary form of Tatar language is based on the Old Tatar language and Middle dialect.
- Tatar language has played a significantly influential role in the development of Finno-Ugric languages that are spoken across the Volga River area.
