Tajik language or Tajiki is actually a modern dialect of the Persian language spoken in Central Asia. It is spoken by nearly 4.4 million people living in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine. However, majority of the speakers are concentrated in Tajikistan, where it is recognized as the national language and in Uzbekistan.

- Tajik, which is actually a variety of the Persian language was named by Stalin in 1932. Stalin did so with the intention of creating a distance between the Persian speakers living in Central Asia and those living in Iran.
- Until 1928 Tajik had been written using an adapted version of the Perso-Arabic script. From 1928 to 1940, it was written using the Latin alphabet, following which a modified Cyrillic alphabet was introduced. In 1989, the Arabic alphabet was reintroduced after the Tajik government passed a law to that effect. However there are still many Tajik speakers who favor the Latin alphabet.
- Tajik is written using the Persian script in Afghanistan and Iran.
- Although Tajik began as a dialect of Persian, due to geographical distance, political boundaries, differences in the standardization process along with influence of the languages spoken in the neighboring areas, like Russian and Turkic, it has grown into an independent language of its own.
- Standard Tajik language is based on the dialects spoken in the north-west areas where the old city of Samarkand is located. It has been influenced by the Uzbek language.
- Tajik language also retains many archaic elements in its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation which cannot be found anywhere else in the Persophone world.
- Samarkand and Bukhara are the most significant historically Tajik speaking cities in Central Asia. Both are located in Uzbekistan. Tajik speakers make for the largest part of the population in these two cities.
- In Tajikistan, the Tajiks make for about 80% of country's population. They are also dominant in Northern Afghanistan and make for about 25% to 30% of the country's population. Urban areas like Kabul, Kunduz, Mazar, Herat and Ghazni have substantial Tajik population.
- In Afghanistan, Tajik is written using the Perso-Arabic script which is called Dari.
- Tajik dialects can be broadly divided into the following groups-
- Central dialects (dialects used in Aini, Mastjoh, Hissor and certain parts of Varzob)
- Northern dialects (spoken in Northern Tajikistan and southern areas of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan)
- Southern dialects (dialects spoken in Qarotegin, Badakhshan, Kulob etc)
- Southeastern dialects (spoken in Panj and Darvoz)
- The Tajik dialects used by native Bukharian Jews living in Central Asia are known as Bukhori. They are a part of the northern dialects group and are distinguished by their use of Hebrew terms, historical use of the Hebrew alphabet and a primarily religious vocabulary. However, Bukhori is easily intelligible to other Tajik speakers.
- Tajik vocabulary is conservative and includes many terms that have not been used in Persian as spoken in Iran and Afghanistan since a very long time. Most of its modern loan words are derived from Russian, Uzbek and Arabic languages.
