  • Tagalog is a Central Philippine language within the Austronesian language family. Being Malayo-Polynesian, it is related to other Austronesian languages such as Javanese, Indonesian, Malay, Fijian, Maori (of New Zealand), Hawaiian, Malagasy (of Madagascar), Samoan, Tahitian, Chamorro (of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands), Tetum (of East Timor), and Paiwan (of Taiwan).
  • It is also closely related to the languages spoken in the Bicol and Visayas regions such as Bikol and the Visayan group including Hiligaynon, Waray-Waray, and Cebuano.
  • Tagalog speakers are not only concentrated in Philippines,  they can be found all around the world. There are more than 1.4 million Tagalog speakers in the US alone. The population of Tagalog speakers makes it the fifth most-spoken language in that country. While in Canada there are about 235,615 Tagalog speakers.
  • Tagalog is related in various degrees to other Austronesian languages like Chamorro, Fijian, Hawaiian, Indonesian, Javanese, Malagasy, Malay, Maori, Paiwan, Samoan, Tahitian and Tetum. It is closer to languages that are spoken in the Visayas and Bicol.
  • Tagalog has been substantially influenced by Arabic, Chinese, English, Hindi, Japanese, Javanese, Old Malay, Sanskrit, Spanish, and Tamil.
  • Written Tagalog has an eventful history. The earliest written records date back to 900 A.D. as found in the Laguna Copperplate Inscription. The inscription uses fragments of Tagalog along with Malay, Sanskrit and Javanese. The earliest book called Doctrina Christiana was written in 1593 in Spanish along with 2 Tagalog versions, one in the Baybayin script and the other in Latin.
  • The Tagalog script uses 5 vowels and 16 consonants. Each syllable has at least one vowel and a consonant and mostly begins with a consonant.
  • Though there has been a lack of proper study of Tagalog dialects, according to linguists, there are four primary dialects which can be grouped into Central, Northern, Southern and Marinduque.
