Syriac is a Middle Aramaic dialect belonging to the western branch of the Semitic family. It was once widely used across the region referred to as the Fertile Crescent. Classical Syriac went on to develop into a major literary language between the 4th to the 8th centuries; it was used all over the Middle East.
At Tomedes we have worked on translating many Syriac documents with our professional Syriac translation experts, we provide Syriac translation services to and from many languages including Syriac to English, and English to Syriac translation.
- Syriac is an important historical language with a rich body of literature that includes theology, liturgy, prose, poetry, hymnody, history, science, medicine, natural history and philosophy. However, most of it is not available to the masses for the want of accessible translated versions.
- Syriac began as a local spoken dialect of Aramaic which was mainly used in Northern Mesopotamia. After Mesopotamia and Syria were conquered by Alexander, the written forms of various Aramaic dialects including Syriac were developed mainly as a reaction to Hellenism. Its development through history can be divided into the following periods –
- Old Syriac
- Middle Syriac – This was further divided into -
- Western Middle Syriac
- Eastern Middle Syriac
- In its prime, Syriac served as the vehicle for Eastern Christianity, and the culture associated with it. Its usage spread across much of Asia and extended up to Malabar and Eastern China. This is why Syriac continues to be regarded as the Syriac Christianity's liturgical language.
- Although Syriac language served mainly as a Christian medium of expression used by Christian communities living in Central Asia, Middle East and Kerala, it had a significant cultural and literary influence on Arabic. The language was used by the Arabs not only as a medium of communication, but also for cultural dissemination. It was also used by the Persians for similar purposes, but to a lesser degree compared to the Arabs.
- The written form of Syriac uses the Syriac alphabet which has been adapted from the Aramaic alphabet. It contains 22 consonants and 3 vowels. Syriac orthography specifically depends upon Arsacid Aramaic.
- At present literary Syriac is mostly used by clerics who are not familiar with the vernacular dialects of the area they work in.
