Sami is a group of Uralic languages that are used by the Sami people living in Norway, Finland, Sweden and towards extreme southwestern Russia. The languages are alternatively known as Saami, Samic, Sámi and Saamic. There are some other names as well like Lapp, Lappish and Lappic but these are regarded as derogatory by many Sami speakers. The language has about 20,000 speakers and is recognized officially in selected Norwegian municipalities like Kautokeino, Kåfjord, Karasjok, Sør-Varanger, Tana and Nesseby.

- Lule Sami (dialect of Central Sami) has approximately 1,500 mainly in Sweden and Norway.
- Inari and Skolt Sami have a few hundred speakers in Finland and some in Kola Peninsula.
- The Sami language that was first used for writing was Ume Sami which is a dialect of Southern Sami with only 20 speakers living in Norway and Sweden.
- The various written forms of Sami languages are based on an expanded version of the Latin alphabet.
