Papiamento also spelt Papiamentu, is a Creole language which has been influenced by a variety of languages including Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French, English and also Arawak and some African languages. Papiamentu has approximately 330,000 speakers, most of whom live in the Netherlands Antilles that includes Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao islands.

Tomedes offers Papiamentu translation services in combination with many languages including Papiamentu to English and English to Papiamentu. We have professional translators working on every translation project and assure best translation quality.

  • Papiamento is recognized as a co-official language in Netherlands Antilles. The other official language being Dutch, it is also the primary written language in these islands.
  • Papiamento is mainly used as a spoken language, with only a few newspapers and magazines using its written form.
  • Because of its primary usage as a spoken language, a standard written form has not been devised for Papiamento. Consequently one can find the language being written in difference ways in the various islands.
  • Papiamento can be defined as a tonal language which uses a high-low tone and low-high tone. Word stress is put on the main syllable and any departure is marked with an accent. The tonal differences are not indicated in written form.
  • Papiamento literature has existed since the 1930s. In August 1987, a Papiamentu medium elementary school was established for the first time.
  • The spelling system used in Aruba is closer to Spanish then the systems used in the other islands.
  • Papiamento is spoken in two primary dialectical variations. One is used in Aruba and the other in Bonaire and Curaçao. The Papiamentu dialects used in Curaçao and Bonaire are classified as the same dialect because for the most part they are similar.
  • Papiamentu language spoken in Aruba sounds quite a lot like Spanish.
  • While the Aruba variety of Papiamentu uses a spelling system based on etymology, the Curaçao and Bonaire dialects use a spelling system based on phonology.
  • The language uses nine vowels most of which have their basis on Ibero-Romance vowels and some on Dutch vowels.
  • A major percentage of the Papiamentu vocabulary has been taken from Spanish and Portuguese languages.
