Occitan is a Romance language spoken by the people of Occitania. This region includes the Southern half of France, spans the Occitan Valleys of Italy and Monaco in addition to the Aran Valley of Spain. The modern version of this language being closely related to Catalan, Occitan has been made the co-official language of Catalonia, Spain.

We have a large number of professional translation providers working with Tomedes as Occitan translation experts. They provide high quality translation services for our clients in every project.

Our professional Occitan translators have prepared the following list of facts about the Occitan language which would help you form an initial idea about the same.

  • Occitan is generally referred to by the term Provencal or Lemosin, the two regions which lie within modern Occitania.
  • Approximately 1.5 million people in France, Italy, Spain and Monaco speak Occitan as their first language.  According to linguists up to seven million people in France understand this language.
  • The Occitan language originated from the word yes or òc which was in turn derived from the Vulgar Latin word hoc, meaning “this”. Dante, the Italian medieval poet said in his De vulgari eloquentia that "some say òc, others say sì, others say oïl”. All Romance languages have developed from the same yes word. The òc language is Occitan, the si language is Italian and the oïl language is French.
  • Occitan was the language in which the medieval troubadours articulated their poetry. The language saw its gradual decline from the time of the French Revolution when diversity of language was considered a major threat. Very little remains of the Occitan language today. The 1999 census found that there were around 610,000 native speakers and perhaps, another million who are familiar with the language. The number of Occitan speakers is constantly on the decline. This is the result of 200 years of conditioned suppression by the French.
  • Occitan is a pluricentric language or a language with several standard versions. The process of standardization started from the 1970s but has not been achieved till now due to the conditions of diaglossia.
  • Researchers claim that the Occitan language consists of approximately 450,000 words.
  • Some characteristics of the Occitan language are: Occitan stress on a word falls on the penultimate syllable, for example, pagina [paˈdʒino̞]. The distribution of palatal consonants is centralized in neutral Occitan.
  • The writing system of Occitan is based on the recommendations of the Institut d'Estudis Occitans, as well as the Conselh de la Lenga Occitana
