- Nauruan language has 16-17 consonant phonemes. Further, it has 12 phonemic vowels including six long and six short ones.
- Nauruan was originally written using 17 letters which included 5 vowels and 12 consonants. Over time and under the influence of various foreign languages (mainly German, Kiribati and Tok Pisin) additional letters found their way into the Nauruan alphabet. This also led way for phonetic differences among some of the vowels, which in turn introduced the use of tilde to distinguish between similar sounds.
- In 1938, Timothy Detudamo, a linguist and Nauruan politician got together with the Nauruan language committee in an effort to make the language easier for reading by Europeans and Americans. They planned to introduce many diacritical symbols for various vowel sounds among various other measures. However the proposed reforms were not carried out fully.
- At present Nauruan is written using 28 letters based on the Latin alphabet which includes 8 vowels and 20 consonants.
- Research into the history of the Nauruan language has revealed that it was spoken in a diverse variety of dialects till 1888 when it became a German colony. Around the same time the first Nauruan texts were published. The differences between various Nauruan dialects were so great that people from different districts frequently had problems in communicating clearly with each other. The growing influence of various foreign languages and the increasing publication of Nauruan books led the various dialects to blend into a standardized language. This standardized language was promoted through translations and dictionaries by Philip Delaporte and Alois Kayser.
- Now the dialectal variation has significantly reduced. One can find an eponymous dialect being used in the district of Yaren and its neighboring areas, but it is only slightly different.
