Moldavian or Moldovan is recognized as the official language of the Republic of Moldova. It is similar to Romanian and shares identical literary standard; in fact it is referred to as Moldovan, as well as Romanian in Moldova. While the Moldovan constitution refers to the Moldavian language as being the official language, the country's Declaration of Independence refers to Romanian as the state language. Consequently, a number of dialectical variations of spoken Moldavian exist.
