Latvian is recognized as the official state language of Latvia. Sometimes people also refer it as Lettish. Latvia has about 1.4 million native speakers; another 150,000 speakers of the language reside abroad. Though it is a relatively ‘small’ language, it has a significant number of non-native speakers. This might be because of a Latvian language policy which encourages the use of Latvian languages in all spheres of life.
Professional language translators at Tomedes have worked on a considerable number of Latvian language projects and continue o do so. In the course of our work we have built up a highly professional language translation team. Our Bulgarian translation professionals have helped us compile the following list of unique insights into the Latvian language –
- Latvian belongs to the Baltic group of languages and is very closely related to Lithuanian. However both languages are not mutually intelligible. Incidentally they are the only two living Baltic languages.
- Latvian is spoken in three different dialectical variations; these are called the Livonian dialects, Middle and Latgalian dialects.
- These broad dialectical groups have further dialectical variations. Livonian has two varieties, they are Vidzeme and Courland. The Middle dialect has three variations namely, Vidzeme, Curonian and Semigallian. The middle dialect is also forms the basis of Standard Latvian.
- The Latvian language is an inflective language with several analytical forms. It has two grammatical genders and two numbers that is singular and plural. Articles are absent.
- Primary word stress in Latvian is put on the first syllable and the basic word order is Subject Verb Object, however word order is comparatively free.
- Modern written Latvian uses an alphabet with 22 letters from the Latin alphabet which are unmodified. It does not use Q, W, X and Y. A further 11 letters are added due to modification. There are six vowels.
- The Latvian spelling system bears a perfect correspondence between phonemes and graphemes. With every phoneme having its own letter, a reader does not need to learn to pronounce words.
