Konkani is a part of the Indo-Aryan languages group under the Indo-European family of languages. It is mainly spoken by residents of the Western coastal areas, specifically the Konkan coast in India. Konkan speaking areas include Goa, Maharashtra, North and South Canara and some areas in Kerala. The language varies across all these regions with each of them following a different dialect having varying styles of pronunciation, tone, vocabulary and sometimes even substantial grammatical differences. Konkani has around 7.6 million speakers most of whom live in India.

- The Indian state of Goa regards Konkani as its official language. It also makes for one of the official Indian languages.
- Konkani does not have its own unique script. The script varies according to the place of residence of Konkani speakers, generally the script used for the native language of that area is used to write Konkani. The government of India has declared Devanagari as the official Konkani script.
- The language uses 36 consonants, 16 basic vowels, 5 semi-vowels, 1 aspirate, 3 sibilants and several diphthongs. Konkani language is characterized by a variety of nasal vowels.
- Konkani language is rich in syntax and morphology. Thus it cannot be said to be a stress language or tonal language.
- The various scripts used for writing Konkani include Brahmi, Devanagari, Roman, Kannada, Malayalam and even Arabic. The choice of script depends upon the region. Brahmi has fallen into disuse. Devanagari and Roman scripts are popular in Goa, the former being the official script. Karnataka’s Konkani population uses the Kannada script, while the Malayalam script is used in and around Kozhikode and Cochin in the Indian state of Kerala. The Arabic script is used by Konkani Muslims who live in the coastal areas of Maharashtra and by the Bhatkal taluka living in Karnataka.
- Although Konkani is spoken by a relatively small number of people it has a remarkably high number of dialects that can be classified according to region, local tongue influence, caste, and religion.
- Various linguists have set out different classifications for Konkani dialects, broadly they are -
- Northern Konkani (Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra)
- Central Konkani (Goa)
- Southern Konkani (Canara region of Karnataka)
- The sheer variety of scripts and dialects has created great hurdles in standardizing the Konkani language. The decision to officially recognize Devanagari script and Antruz dialect for Konkani has faced strong opposition within Goa as well as outside the state. According to the critics, the Antruz dialect is not intelligible to majority of the Goans. When it comes to scripts, the Roman script is widely favored in Goa and Kannada script in Karnataka which leaves the Devanagari script with few takers.
