- Ethnologue has classified Kannada as a group of languages that comprise of Badaga, Holiya, Kannada and Urali.
- Kannada is written using 49 phonemic letters that are divided into 3 groups - Swaragalu which comprises of vowels and contains thirteen letters; Yogavaahakagalu which contains two letters that are neither vowel, nor consonant, and Vyanjanagalu compromising 34 consonants.
- The total number of written symbols exceeds 49 characters because the characters can be combined with each other to create compound characters.
- The Kannada script is syllabic and has been developed from the Brahmi script. It is somewhat complicated due to the usage of various symbols and combinations of “half-letters". The script is perfectly phonetic, except for the sound associated with "half n", which turns into half m.
- The Kannada script is also used in writing other languages like Kodava Takk, Konkani, and Tulu.
