  • The written form of Inupiaq was first developed by explorers in Alaska. They began by writing down the Inupiaq words they heard using the scripts of their own language. As a result they came up with various writing systems all of which lacked consistency in the sense that spelling was very often inconsistent, moreover the explorers frequently got confused about sounds with which  they were not familiar.
  • The system of spelling which was adopted for Inupiaq was developed in Greenland and Labrador by the Moravian missionaries. The Modern Inupiaq writing system was devised in 1946 by an Inupiaq Presbyterian minister from Barrow by the name of Roy Ahmaogak and Eugene Nida who worked with the Summer Institute of Linguistics.
  • The Inupiaq language uses a vigesimal system for counting. It has symbols for numbers from 0 to 19.
  • The languages uses three basic vowels, they are 'a', 'i', and 'u'.
  • Inupiaq language is spoken in a variety of dialects, which can be classified under two broad categories, under each there exist two smaller dialect groups -
  • Seward Peninsula Inupiaq – sub-groups - Bering Strait & Qawiaraq
  • Northern Alaskan Inupiaq – sub-groups – Malimiutun & North Slope
  • Just like other Eskimo-Aleut languages, the various Inupiaq dialects can be described as polysynthetic. This means it’s a specific type of agglutinative language in which a root can be synthesized and a variety of grammatical affixes can be used for creating long words with meanings that are equivalent to sentences.
