Inuktitut belongs to the Eskimo-Aleut family of languages. It is primarily spoken in Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Siberia and serves as an official language in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Overall there are about 65,000 Inuktitut speakers. Inuktitut language is spoken in a variety of dialects which constitute a dialect continuum across the Arctic. - Following on the lines of other Eskimo-Aleut languages Inuktitut has a rich morphological system. All words start with a root morpheme and can be suffixed with other morphemes. Inuktitut uses hundreds of distinct suffixes. As a result many different morphemes can be added to root words to describe a variety of things which in other languages like English might require the use of several words for proper expression.
- Inuktitut is written using the syllabary style of writing called titirausiq nutaaq. This is primarily used in Canada and Nunavik. Another script based on the Latin alphabet called qaliujaaqpait is used in some parts of Canada, and also in Greenland and Alaska. The Cyrillic alphabet is used for writing Inuktitut in Siberia.
