Igbo belongs to the Niger-Congo languages group and has around 20 to 25 million speakers in Nigeria. It also serves as one of the official languages in Nigeria. The southeastern and extreme southern parts of Nigeria have a major concentration of Igbo speakers.

At Tomedes we have worked on a wide variety of Igbo translation projects across a large number of languages including Igbo to English and English to Igbo translation. We continue to add talented and experienced Igbo translation providers to our team expanding our services to many more language pairs and specialized fields.

  • Igbo language has a huge number of dialects creating a dialect continuum, and not all of them are mutually intelligible.
  • The different dialects of Igbo are distinguished by their orthography and/or accent. The first standardized Igbo dialect was created in 1972.
  • Among the various dialects, Central Igbo, which is based on the dialects used in Eastern Nigeria’s Central Oweir Province is the most widely used.
  • The written form of Igbo language was first developed by the Ekoi people. It was based on Nsibidi formalized pictograms. The standard written Igbo that has been used since 1962, is based on the Umuahia and Owerri dialects. It is written using the Latin alphabet combined with Nsibidi pictograms.
  • In Anioma, the Igbo language is known as Asusu Igbo and contains most of the Igbo words and idiomatic expressions.
  • Following several West African languages, Igbo vocabulary also uses words loaned from European languages, especially English. Some such borrowed words are operator and blue (blu in Igbo).
  • The Igbo vocabulary contains a variety of words which have special characteristics, for example, there are names which have come about by fusing old words and phrases, some words can have multiple meanings and when combined with certain other words they can form entirely different words.
  • Igbo people make extensive use of idioms and proverbs, in fact expertise in the language is measured by the speaker's ability to fill his/her speech with a generous dose of appropriate proverbs.
  • Igbo is a tonal language and uses two distinct tones- high and low. One might also come across a third tone which can be described as a down-stepped high tone. Tones are also indicated, though not always, in written Igbo through grave and acute accent markers over the vowel, for high and low tones respectively.

Tomedes guarantees high quality Igbo language translation for very competitive translation rates. We work with an intelligent automatic bidding system that calculates the lowest possible rates for high quality translation and assign every project to the best available translation providers.
