Persian is an Iranian language which belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Though it originated in Iran and is primarily spoken by the Persian people, the wide spread global reach of the Persian Empire in the past has ensured that the language spread out to many countries all over the world, including Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan have designated it as their official languages. It has 144 million speakers globally, making it the thirteenth or fourteenth most popularly spoken languages.

  • One can find three varieties of modern Persian. They are
    • Modern Persian
    • Persian Dari and
    • Tajik
  • Modern Persian, also known as Farsi is the standard Persian language as it is spoken in Iran. As mentioned above, Persian is also spoken in Afghanistan. There and in Uzbekistan, it is known as Dari. Tajik is the variety of Persian that is used in Tajikistan, Russia and Uzbekistan. There are other local dialects of Persian found in Iran, Tajikistan and Afghanistan which have some differences from Standard Persian. Some of these dialects are Hazarangi (Afghanistan), Darwazi (Afghanistan and Tajikistan), Lari (Iran) and Dehwari (Pakistan).
  • In Iran and Afghanistan, Persian is written using the Persian script, while in Tajikistan, Russia and Afghanistan the Cyrillic script is used.
  • Persian grammar is similar to the grammar of Indo-European languages. Sentences follow a Subject-Object-Verb order. Interrogative participles that ask a yes or no question appear at the start of the sentence, and modifiers mostly proceed the nouns modified by them.
  • Persian language uses prepositions unlike other languages that use Subject-Object-Verb order. One can also find sentences with comparatively free word order; this is helped by the fact that parts of speech are usually unambiguous. This characteristic also provides Persian language with great flexibility for making rhymes and verses.
  • Nouns do not carry any gender. However, they are marked by an accusative marker in specific accusative cases. There are some special rules for nouns that have been borrowed from Arabic. The use of prepositions is similar to English.
