Malay belongs to the Austronesian family of languages. It is chiefly used by the Malay people and those who may belong to other ethnic groups, but live in Peninsular Malaysia, central eastern Sumatra, Singapore, the Riau Islands, certain areas of the coast of Borneo, and southern Thailand. Malay has around 200 million speakers around the world, making it the tenth most popularly spoken languages. It also creates requirements for Malay translations in a variety of language pairs.

  • Malay serves among the official languages of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. It is also known as ‘Bahasa Indonesia’ or Indonesian language in Indonesia and East Timor. Malay has been in use as the lingua franca in the archipelago since as long back as the 15th century. Old Malay which is the earliest form of the language had a heavy influence of Sanskrit, and was completely different from Modern Malay.
  • Malay became popular after it began to be used as a trade language by the Sultanate of Malacca during the 15th century. During this period the language was heavily influenced by Persian, Arabic, Sanskrit and Hindi vocabularies which played a significant role in developing the present form of the language. It was declared as the sole official language of Indonesia in 1928.
  • Malay is written using Rumi, a Latin alphabet. Another Malay script, a modified form of the Arabic script called Jawi is also used. Rumi has been declared as the official script of Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia also uses the Latin script but has a different orthography. In Brunei, Rumi and Jawi serve as the co-official languages.
  • In Malay, new words can be formed by attaching affixes (prefixes, suffixes, circumfixes and infixes), creating compound words and reduplication of words. Affixes can be classified into noun, adjective or verb affixes. Malay language also uses affixes that have been borrowed from languages like Arabic, Sanskrit and English. Compound words are generally formed by joining root words. Reduplication of words can be of three types - Full reduplication, Partial reduplication, Rhythmic reduplication and Reduplication of meaning.
  • Malay uses a type of words called measure words, this type of words are also found in Vietnamese, Burmese, Chinese and Bengali, they are used for measurement but the literal English translation is inaccurate. For example, ‘butir’ which means ‘rounded object’ is used for measuring ‘grains’.
