Hungarian belongs to the Uralic group of languages and is mostly distantly related to other European languages. Though it is primarily spoken by the inhabitants of Hungary and the Hungarian people living in the neighboring countries, the number of people using Hungarian as their first language runs into nearly 14.5 million, which creates the requirement for Hungarian translations for several language pairs including Hungarian to English and English to Hungarian translation. A few aspects of the Hungarian language are-
- Out of the total Hungarian speakers mentioned above around 9.5 to 10 million reside in modern Hungary, while another 2 million or so live in areas which were a part of the Kingdom of Hungary before 1920. Hungarian speakers can also be found in Serbia, Slovakia, Croatia, Ukraine, Slovenia and Austria. Somewhere around a million Hungarian speakers can be found living in other parts of the planet. Moreover one can also find a few thousand Hungarian speakers in the USA.
- Being the official language of Hungary, Hungarian has also been designated as one of the official languages of the European Union.
- The various dialects of Hungarian as identified by Ethnologue are - West Danube, Alföld, Danube-Tisza, Northeast Hungarian, King's Pass Hungarian, Northwest Hungarian, West Hungarian and Székely. These are not very different from each other and speakers of different dialects can understand each other easily. There is another dialect called Csángó which is largely used in Romania’s Bacău County. Since this group of people has remained isolated from other Hungarians through most of their history their dialect is relatively different and closer to Medieval Hungarian.
- The Hungarian alphabet has 25 consonants and 14 vowels. The latter can be teamed in pairs of short and long vowels most of which have similar pronunciation differing only in their duration. Even the lengths of consonants are distinctive in Hungarian.
- The Hungarian grammar does not prescribe any genders. Furthermore, unlike many other languages, while writing in Hungarian one does not capitalize the letters of specific types of words. Capitalization is used only for the first letter of sentences, and for places and names. Unlike English, the order of words is not important in Hungarian and the sequence of words generally denotes decreasing importance.
- It is a very rich language and has a number of synonyms for most words. As an example the coloring and breed of a horse can be described by 200 separate words. Being an agglutinative language the writing uses affixes very frequently. Apart from prefixes and suffixes one can also find circumfixes. Another feature which differentiates Hungarian from English is the use of postpositions instead of prepositions.
