Apart from India it is also one of the official languages of Fiji. About 48% of the Fijian population is made of native Hindi speakers. There is a substantial population of Indians in the USA who are native Hindi speakers and in terms of global positioning Hindi stands among some of the top most frequently spoken languages of the world. This throws open a huge number of Hindi translation opportunities including Hindi to English and English to Hindi translation. Hindi has a long and rich history and is characterized by certain unique features, knowledge of which would be useful for translators and translation buyers –
- Hindi has its roots in Sanskrit which is the mother of many Indian languages. It began as several local dialects of Sanskrit at turn of tenth century. These dialects were Awadhi, Braj and Khari boli.
- During the almost thousand years of Muslim rule over India, Hindi absorbed many Arabic and Persian words as well. Over the years a new style developed which had characteristics of both Hindi and Urdu; it went on to be called Hindustani.
- However Standard Hindi is significantly different from Urdu. For starters, it uses the Devanagari script for writing. Its vocabulary has been developed from the Sanskrit language.
- Hindi grammar follows the subject-object-verb convention. So unlike English, verbs are placed at the end of sentences. Another difference with English is that Hindi does not have any definite article. Whenever required the number “one” is used as an indefinite singular article.
- Hindi also uses postpositions unlike which uses preposition. Hindi grammar uses two genders and pronouns for first, second and third person.
This is but just a small sampling of the many features of Hindi language which differentiates it from English and other global languages. In order to carry out high quality Hindi translations one needs to be intimately familiar with Hindi, apart from being an expert in the source language(s).
