Danish belongs to Scandinavian languages group which in turn is a subgroup of the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages. Danish is spoken by approximately 6 million people most of whom live in Denmark. A further 50,000 Danes living towards north of Schleswig-Holstein Germany also speak Danish. In the Danish territories like Faroe Islands and Greenland, the language has been awarded with an official status and is compulsorily taught as a foreign language. Danish has also been designated as one of the official languages of the European Union. One can also find Danish speakers in the U.S., Canada and Argentina. Some important facts about Danish language are –

  • Danish developed from the East Norse dialect group. A recent classification that was based on mutual intelligibility, grouped modern spoken Danish, Swedish and Norwegian under a Mainland Scandinavian group. Those who are good at any of these three languages can understand the other two quite well.
  • The Danish language is divided into the following definite dialect groups –
    • Eastern Danish
    • Island Danish
    • Jutlandic
  • Danish grammar prescribes two genders for nouns which are common and neuter gender, however one can also find masculine, feminine and neuter being used in certain dialects. The infinitive forms of verbs end with a vowel which is mostly ‘e’.
  • Much of the Danish vocabulary has been developed from Old Norse language and Middle Low German. New words are formed by compounding.
  • Unlike in the English system, numerals in Danish which are above 20 are written and spoken in a reversed form, for example – 31 is written as one and thirty.
  • The earliest Danish script had been derived from the Runic alphabet. However after Christianity was introduced in Denmark, letters from the Latin alphabet entered the Danish script. Over the years it became quite similar to the English alphabet with only three extra letters - æ, ø, and å that come towards the end.
  • Danish language has a unique sound system; it has a tendency for substantial assimilation and reduction in both vowels and consonants.
