Cherokee or Tsalagi belongs to the Iroquoian family of languages. It is spoken by somewhere around 10,000 people living in the Cherokee Nation in Northern Oklahoma. Cherokee speakers can also be found in the Eastern Band of Cherokee. It is the only Southern Iroquoian language that is still in use.

Tomedes has worked on many Cherokee translation projects which have included English to Cherokee and Cherokee to English translation. Many of our professional translators are native Cherokee speakers which equips them with the kind of familiarity with the language that is necessary for producing the best and most authentic Cherokee language translation.

  • The language is written using a syllabary writing system which was specially created for writing it by Sequoyah Guess in the early 19th century. The Cherokee syllabary contains 84 characters which stand for as many different syllables that are used in the spoken form of the language. Though some of the symbols used in the Cherokee language appear similar to Latin characters, they are associated with entirely different sounds.
  • The Cherokee writing system uses six long and six short novels which include a nasal vowel as well.
  • Cherokee is spoken in a number of different dialects, the main ones being Eastern Band’s Giduwa dialect, and the Overhill or Otali dialect spoken in Oklahoma. Another dialect called the Lower Dialect was also used by the Cherokees till it became extinct in the early 20th century.
  • The Overhill dialect has about 9,000 speakers and is primarily used in Oklahoma. It has grown significantly apart from the original syllabary by adapting many borrowed and contracted words. Though present day Cherokee speakers use 85 syllables, the Overhill dialect speakers use as many as 122.
  • Just like many other Native American languages, Cherokee is polysynthetic. This means that in Cherokee a single word can be formed by linking together many morphemes. This enables easy construction of new words that can be used to express or describe modern concepts.
  • Cherokee language uses a strong tonal system. The tones can be combined in a variety of ways. Though this system is gradually simplifying across many areas it continues to be very important and is used dedicatedly by many speakers.
