Catalan is a Western Romance language which is spoken in eastern and northeastern Spain. The areas where it is popularly spoken are Catalonia, the Balearic Isles, Valencia, La Franja and also in a few municipalities of Murcia. Beyond Spain, Catalan is also spoken in France’s Roussillon region, in Alghero the Sardinian city, and also in state of Andorra. The US also has an emigrant population of Catalan speakers.
There are about 12 million speakers of Catalan all over the world and the language serves as the official working language of Andorra, co-official language of Catalonia, Valencia, Alghero and the Balearic islands. Tomedes works with many professional Catalan translators from all over the world and provides translations in numerous language pairs and fields.
- Catalan originated from Vulgar Latin that was spoken in the Roman province - Hispania Tarraconensis. Towards the end of 10th century it had grown into a fully developed language having an identity of its own which could be distinguished from Latin.
- The various dialectical varieties of Catalan can be divided under two primary dialect groups - Occidental and Oriental. Occidental has further subdivisions called Valencian and North-West Catalan while Oriental can be divided into Alguerese, Balearic, Central, and Roussillonnais. These dialects excepting Alguerese are further divided into more subdialects.
- The dialectical variations primarily exist in areas of vocabulary, pronunciation and verb conjugation. The differences are minor and speakers of different Catalan dialects can understand each other. The written language is fairly standard and does not reflect any dialectical influences, this has been achieved by the efforts of The Institute of Catalan Studies. The Institute looks after the establishment and regular updating of the standard Catalan language based on the Barcelona dialect and containing some Valencian admixtures.
- Catalan vocabulary reflects its origins in Vulgar Latin. Phonetically, it is closer to Occitan compared to Spanish. The language uses more than 2,000 Spanish loanwords.
