Cambodian or Khmer serves as the official language of Cambodia and is the native language of the Khmer people. Among Austroasiatic languages Khmer has the second highest number of speakers and ranks right after Vietnamese. The number of Khmer speakers lies between 15-20 million. As such there has been considerable demand for Khmer translation services.
Tomedes seeks to fulfill the demand for Khmer translation services through its team of professional translators that include qualified and substantially experienced Khmer translators who translate between Khmer and a variety of other languages.
- Khmer language is a part of the Eastern branch of Mon-Khmer family of language which is itself a subdivision of the Austro-Asiatic languages group.
- The closest linguistic relatives of Khmer include languages from Bahnaric, Katuic, and Pearic families which are spoken by the tribes found in the hilly areas of the regions where Austro-Asiatic languages are spoken.
- Khmer has been influenced substantially by the Sanskrit and Pali languages. Due to geographical closeness it has been influenced by, as well as influenced neighboring languages like Cham, Vietnamese, Lao and Thai.
- Unlike Vietnamese, Lao and Thai languages, Khmer is not a tonal language.
- The main Khmer dialects that are mutually intelligible are-
- Battambang which is used in Northern Cambodia.
- Phnom Penh which is the capital dialect; it is also spoken in provinces around the capital.
- Northern Khmer or Khmer Surin which is used by the ethnic Khmer natives living in Northeast Thailand.
- Southern Khmer or Khmer Krom which is used by Khmer population in the Mekong Delta.
- Cardamom Khmer which is an outdated form of the language; it is used by a small group of people living in the Cardamom Mountains.
- Though the dialect used in Phnom Penh, which is also the standard form of the language is mutually intelligible with other dialects, there can be significant variations between some of the dialects, like a Khmer Krom speaker coming from Vietnam would face a great deal of problems in communicating with a native Khmer speaker from Sisaket Province (Thailand).
- Khmer is written using its own abugida script which is locally called Aksar Khmer. This script was derived from the Indian Pallava script. It is identical to the Thai and Lao scripts. Khmer numerals have also been derived from Indian numerals.
- Written Khmer follows a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentence structure with prepositions. Numerals adjectives, and demonstratives follow their noun. The noun itself does not have any gender or numerical distinction. Plurality of a noun can be denoted by using numbers, postnominal particles or by doubling the adjective.
