Berber refers to a group of closely related languages that are spoken in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and also by Berber communities in some parts of Mali and Niger. Berber languages are also spoken sparsely across Sahara and in the northern areas of the Sahel.

Berber language speakers have started a movement to unite northern Berber languages into a single standard. Towards this end the Tamazight which has traditionally been known as Central Morocco Tamazight is being used to refer to standard Berber and sometimes also for Berber languages groups in totality. However the usage has not yet achieved reasonable consistency and many Berbers don’t regard themselves as Tamazight.

Berber translation services are provided by Tomedes through suitably qualified and highly experienced translators. We offer Berber translation services to and from numerous languages and in many fields.

  • Berber language belongs to the Afro-Asiatic family of languages that includes Arabic, Ancient Egyptian, Somali, and Hausa.
  • According to various sources it has been estimated that the total number of Berber languages speakers is somewhere between 16 to 25 million. Some sources also quote a figure as high as 30 million. Most Berber speakers can be found living in Algeria and Morocco.
  • The major Berber languages include –
    • Central Morocco Tamazight and Tashelhiyt
    • Northern Morocco - Tarifit,
    • Algeria – Kabyle
  • Berber languages have used various scripts for writing purposes over the last 2000 years. However the tradition of writing has frequently been disrupted by various invasions. Earliest records suggest it was written using the Tifinagh alphabet which is still used by the Tuareg. Later it was written using the Arabic alphabet. This was replaced by the Latin alphabet in the 20th century. Recently a script derived from the Tifinagh alphabet was made official in Morocco. The Latin alphabet is official in Niger and Mali, and quasi-official in Algeria.
  • Berber languages have also played an influential role among Maghrib Arabic dialects, including Maltese, or Morocco Arabic as substratum. The Iberian Romance languages were also influenced by Berber languages in the Middle Ages.
