Aymara is the native language of the Aymara people living in the Andes. It is one of the very few Native American languages that have more than a million speakers. There are about 2.2 million Aymara speakers residing in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. It serves as one of the official languages of Peru and Bolivia.
Tomedes works with highly qualified and professional Aymara translation experts from all over the world to provide world class translation services for numerous language pairs combined with Aymara, including English to Aymara and Aymara to English translation. The following is a brief guide to the Aymara language prepared by our professional translation providers.
- A number of linguists hold the opinion that Aymara is related to Quechua which is a neighboring language and more widely spoken of the two. But this is a disputed view as a majority of the linguists hold that though the two languages have similar phonologies, it does not necessarily mean that they are related as the similarities could be explained as a result of the long term interaction between Aymara and Quechua.
- Aymara is an agglutinative language; it is also polysynthetic to some degree.
- Sentences in the Aymara language follow a Subject-Object-Verb word order.
- There is some variation in the use of Aymara language across various regions, however all dialects are mutually intelligible. The major dialects can be broadly classified under three primary dialects; these are Northern Aymara, Southern Aymara and Intermediate Aymara.
- Written Aymara has an interesting history, originally the language was written using symbols that included images of people or things. These symbols portrayed various things and even words but were never integrated into a standard writing system.
- In 16th century, under the Spanish influence the Latin alphabet was adopted for writing Aymara. Over the decades and centuries that followed, a variety of spelling systems were devised. Eventually in 1985, the government of Peru introduced the Aymara Official Alphabet to be used as the standard spelling system.
