Albanian belongs to the family of Indo-European languages. It is spoken by almost 6 million people. Majority of the Albanian speakers can be found living in Albania and Kosovo. They can also be found in certain areas of the Balkans which have an Albanian population like southern Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, and Montenegro.
Communities of native Albanian language speakers are also present along the eastern coast of southern Italy, island of Sicily and in Greece. Other countries where small populations of Albanian speakers reside are - Scandinavia, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, these speakers are a part of the modern diaspora that has originated from the Balkans, they constitute about 3 million people.
All this gives rise to substantial Albanian translation requirements, whether it is English to Albanian translation, Albanian to English translation, or professional language translations involving Albanian and any other languages. A few important aspects of the Albanian language follows-
- Albanian has been adapted from the Tosk dialect. It is regarded as the national language in Albania and Kosovo. Even in the Republic of Macedonia, the municipalities having more than 22% ethnic Albanian inhabitants have designated Albanian as an official language. Similarly, Montenegro has also declared Albanian as the official language in municipalities which have ethnic Albanian population.
- The Albanian language is used in three dialectical variations the primary ones being Gheg and Tosk. The third is constituted by a transitional dialect zone between Gheg and Tosk and have characteristics of both Gheg and Tosk, like the nasal vowels of Gheg and the rhotacism found in Tosk. The written form of Gheg and Tosk are mutually intelligible but the regional dialects are not so.
- Gheg is further divided into four sub-dialects; these are Northeast Gheg, Northwest Gheg, Southern Gheg, and Central Gheg. Tosk has five sub-dialects; they are Northern Tosk, Arbërisht, Arvanitika, Labërisht and Çam.
- Since the 15th century, Albanian has been written using many different alphabet systems. They have ranged from Greek and Italian to Turko-Arabic. A standardized and official form was developed in 1908 from a Gheg dialect and the Latin alphabet. Later, after the 2nd World War the Tosk dialect was adopted as a model for the Standard Albanian language. Contemporary standard Albanian alphabet is constituted of 29 consonants and 7 vowels. Gheg is characterized by long and nasal vowels which are not used in Tosk.
- The Albanian grammar prescribes gender for nouns; they are neuter, feminine and masculine. The nouns are also described in singular and plural numbers.
